Resourced Provision for Deaf Children

We have a specialist Resourced Provision for deaf children at Manor Junior School. This provision supports deaf children in accessing the mainstream curriculum and developing their communication skills through a variety of communication modes, according to their needs. The provision is able to provide support from Reception (at Manor Infant School) through to Year 6, and is based in a purpose-built, acoustically treated room within the mainstream Junior School building.

Each deaf child is part of their mainstream class and takes full part in the life of the school. They are supported in class by a Communication Support Assistant (using sign language: BSL signs) or by an LSA, according to their needs.

Staff have annual and ongoing training in Deaf Awareness, and the support of the school Teacher of the Deaf.

The whole school has participated in the Signature Sign Language Week for the past two years, giving all children the chance to learn some basic signs to help them to communicate with their deaf peers. In addition, opportunities are available to become a part of the Signing Choir and to join the signing club.

We have weekly visits to the Resourced Provision from our Deaf Instructor who leads activities to help develop Deaf Identity, sign language skills and the child’s knowledge of their equipment. Periodically, we have opportunities to meet with deaf children from other resourced provisions.

On arrival at school every morning, the Teacher of the Deaf checks that all amplification systems are working efficiently. Many children additionally benefit from the use of a radio aid in school.

The Resourced Provision pupils have access to the Teacher of the Deaf every day, and are withdrawn to work in a quiet environment at different points during the day, according to need. They may work one-to-one or sometimes in a small group of pupils with similar needs. Each child has a Personal Learning Plan and is additionally supported with pre and post teaching of vocabulary and concepts that they will need in their mainstream classroom. Their progress is closely monitored and planning for their learning is adapted accordingly. A variety of visual resources is used, both in the classroom and the Resourced Provision.

We liaise closely with parents and with other professionals working with the child, for instance, Audiologists and Speech and Language Therapists. We work in partnership with parents and encourage regular communication through Home/Schools books, emails and phone calls…whatever parents find the most helpful. Parents are always welcome to meet with the Teacher of the Deaf at school.
